Generate Your Business Idea (GYB) is a training programme for people who want to start a business but are not sure of the business idea to pursue. It assists potential entrepreneurs to identify different business ideas, to analyse them and select the most promising one. GYB complements ILO’s Start Your Business (SYB) training programme as a potential entrepreneur needs to have a clear idea of the business they propose to start. 

Objectives 

After this training, the participants should be able to: 

• Assess their potential to become successful entrepreneurs; 
• Clearly explain any business idea that they are considering;
• Create a list of ideas from several sources of business concepts;
• Select the best ideas to create their own businesses.

Content 

The training includes the following four parts: 

Module 1: Are you ready to be an entrepreneur?

Module 2: What makes a business idea?

Module 3: How to create your business idea list

Module 4: Which business idea is best to pursue?

Duration 

This training lasts two days, or 12 hours

Overview

Start Your Business (SYB) is a training programme for potential entrepreneurs who have a feasible business idea for their own small enterprise. The training helps in developing a detailed business plan and to actually get started. The training also provides an opportunity to test the required entrepreneurial skills and the business plan in a simulated and safe environment.

Objectives

After this training, the participants should be able to:

• Describe the content of a business plan
• Consolidate business ideas
• Realize business ideas and translate them into a completed business plan
• Assess their readiness for starting a business

Content

The training includes nine modules as follows:

Module 1: Business plan – Introduction

Module 2: Reinforce your business idea

Module 3: Marketing plan

Module 4: Staffing

Module 5: Organization and management

Module 6: Buying for your business

Module 7: Costing your goods and services

Module 8: Financial planning

Module 9: Start-up capital

Duration

This training lasts for five days = 30 hours = 1,800 minutes

Five training days are separated into three stages:

• Stage One: Two days = 12 hours = 720 minutes
• Stage Two: Two days = 12 hours = 720 minutes
• Stage Three: One day = 6 hours = 360 minutes
• There is a homework assignment between the stages to encourage the participants to collect information and apply what they have learned to create a business plan step by step. Therefore, an interval (one week at least) between stages is recommended to make sure that the participants have enough time to complete their homework before coming to the class.

Overview

IYB targets existing and practicing entrepreneurs to good principles of business management. The six IYB modules (Buying and Stock Control, Marketing, Record Keeping, Costing, Planning for your business, and People and Productivity) can be taught individually or all combined in a full course.

Objective

The objective of IYB training is to enable micro and small-sized entrepreneurs to set up a basic business management system. By the end of the training course, these entrepreneurs will have been enabled to set up standardized processes for buying, stock control, record keeping, costing, financial forecasting, marketing and productivity improvements through improved workplace practices.

IYB training is designed for micro and small-scale entrepreneurs to

Module 1: Market their products more effectively

Module 2: Set up buying procedures

Module 3: Set up a stock control system

Module 4: Forecast their sales, costs and cash flow and produce balance sheets and profit and loss statements

Module 5: Cost their goods and services

Module 6: Keep records

Module 7: Improve productivity through improved workplace practices.

The IYB training materials comprise seven IYB manuals. Different regions have further to that developed sector adaptations such as construction, fishing or agriculture, or added relevant modules such as “HIV/AIDS Information And Facts” in Africa. The IYB manuals are used during training and also serve the entrepreneurs as a source of reference after the course. Each manual covers one basic business management concept and explains step by step how to set up systematic management processes. Explanations are given in easy-to-understand language and plenty of illustrations are used to explain concepts and solutions as clearly as possible. Relevant examples and exercises are important features in the manual, enabling the reader to immediately apply the theory of learning and to step by step complete the corresponding section in the business plan booklets.

There is also an SIYB Business Game. The SIYB Business Game enables the potential
entrepreneurs to simulate a small business. This advanced version of the Game allows
the entrepreneurs to experiment the challenges of managing small businesses with multiproduct portfolios in different markets.

Duration

The IYB training is delivered on a modular basis to provide flexibility for entrepreneurs.

Standard Duration: Approximately 7½ days (60 hours)

Structure:

• The complete programme consists of 7 modules, which can be offered individually or as a comprehensive course.
• Sessions can be spread over several weeks to enable participants to apply learning progressively.
• Includes a group counselling session (recommended within four weeks post-training) to reinforce learning and provide follow-up support.
